PHM17 Education and Standards Panel
Chairs: Ravi Rajamani and Jeff Bird, PHM Society Standards Committee
PHM17 Education and Standards Panel
Chairs: Ravi Rajamani and Jeff Bird, PHM Society Standards CommitteeOne of the PHM Society’s objectives is the advancement of PHM as an engineering discipline which includes standards and education. Panels on standards in development and what is needed have been conducted and documented in past annual conferences and a Society forum exists for exchanges: http://www.phmsociety.org/forum/592. SAE International as a Technical Partner has greatly contributed to these activities. The PHM Society is also a member of the US Technical Advisory Group of the ISO TC108 that covers diagnostics and prognostics.
How do standards and education come together for the PHM community? Both are enablers for individual and organizational achievement. This panel aims to examine existing methods and issues for advancing standards education in the PHM domains. Three perspectives on the body of knowledge are sought for discussion with the audience:
a) Conventional standards organizations (open and commercial?)
b) Industry (internal closed within supply chains?)
c) Academia (open and lifelong learning?)The panel will address generation, availability and renewal of the bodies of PHM knowledge with proprietary, commercial, supply chain realities. We will post the Background and Challenges presentation in the summer to help the panelists and audience to prepare. Each panelist will conclude their presentation with three challenges to the audience (and PHM world) to salt the open discussion.
Panelists:
• Background and Challenges – Brian Weiss NIST
• Standards Organization Perspective- Logen Johnson, SAE International
• Government Perspective- Patrick Dallosta, Defense Acquisitions University
• Industry Perspective- Duncan Chase, Rolls Royce
• Academic Perspective- Karl Reichard, Penn StateBackground
• MIL-Handbook-61A Configuration Management Guidebook

• SAE-EIA-649B, SAE-EIA-649-1Challenges
1. Define Career Field Competencies
2. Define Certification Requirements
3. Identify Principles and Applications for Importance/application of standards based on statutory and regulatory requirements
4. Define technical processes – Guidebooks
5. Link Assessments to Competencies and Courseware
